HEAD DOES IT AGAIN!!!

I’m happy to report that Head (along with Head’s staff photographer Kenny the Gardener) have successfully finished Super Mario Brothers Wii. Not only that, but all the star coins were obtained and the ninth world was finished as well. Although this has not been confirmed, Head is “pretty sure” they set a world record for finishing the game. Ree Ree: “We started in January of 2011 and it only took us until October of 2012 to finish. We’re really good so it’s pretty much impossible that anybody else has finished the game yet”. Repeated requests from gaming website Twin Galaxies for world record verification have gone unanswered at this time. Although the world celebrated along with Head, it was bittersweet as Tulu was not there for the final battle. Tulu: “As much as I would have liked to have been there for the end, it was probably for the best; if I had been there, the birth of my daughter earlier in the year would have understandably moved to being the second proudest moment of my life.”

R.I.P. DEREK SHEPHERD

We were saddened today to hear of the passing of Derek Shepherd.

The first time we met Derek was when we played a show with the Queers around 1997 at Pioneer Square Theater. I saw Derek and was shocked at how much he looked like Touch back when we were in Junior High. I would guess Derek must’ve been 14 or 15 years old. We asked photographer Curt Doughty to take some photos of them together (which I have to admit was more for my amusement than anything). We told Derek he had won the Touch Look-Alike contest, and gave him an ultra rare Head Zeppelin shirt.  He was a sweet kid.  About a year later, we played with Derek’s band The Retards when we both opened for the Groovie Ghoulies at Velvet Elvis.

I didn’t see much of Derek for a while after the Retards broke up. When he resurfaced, it seemed to me that his love had gravitated towards power-pop music. He played in Weird Science, Plastic Letters (which I believe had their LP produced by Peter Case from the Nerves/Plimsouls) and The Pop Machine. We saw Derek on and off through the years. He was always very pleasant to us and excited to talk about whatever project he was doing. When he worked at Bop Street Records, he unsucessfully tried to talk us into playing at the store (I also remember him scoring a Pointed Sticks/Wipers Showbox Concert poster while working there)! Last time he resurfaced here was in a band called the Sick Secrets, which I never saw.

The last time I saw Derek was when I was driving through the U-District a few months ago with Big D. I saw a guy walking down Brooklyn with what looked like a bag of groceries; then I said to Big D, “Holy shit!!! There’s Wreckless Derek!!!” I thought about stopping, but decided I didn’t want to bother him.

We’re really going to miss you, Derek, and our thoughts go out to your family.

Here is a song by one of Derek’s heroes, Peter Case:

Ree Ree’s 115th Dream

The cats woke me up at about 4:30 in the morning last night. Since they get fed dry food by the li’l woman at 4, I knew it was BS but I got up anyway just in case she fell asleep before they got fed. Sure enough, there were a few kibbles left. There was no chance I was going to feed them their 8 AM wet food before 7:30 AM at the earliest. That didn’t stop li’l Sugar from waking me up every 15 minutes with one of her time tested alarm clock waking methods. In between my being woken up I had the on going dream/nightmare that HEAD was playing a show. The show was half full (not unusual) and the people there were not really there to see us (also not unusual) but when I looked at the set list, I started laughing because I didn’t recognize any of the songs. The band and audience didn’t seem to be bothered by this which I guess is a good thing. In between waking up to deal with the cats wanting food I came back to the same dream. I looked at the set list and the only song I remember now being on it was one called BOGO. I said “BOGO? what the hell is BOGO?” I determined it must be some song about the consumer term “Buy One Get One”. By that time 7:30 rolled around and I felt the cats, and me, had had enough and I gave them their breakfast. It turned out the dry food was almost empty so li’l Sugar’s complaints about lack of food was legitimate. Don’t worry, I had another bag in the car and gave them each another scoop of dry food.
